Windows Vista comes with an enhanced Graphical User Interface and is packed with innovative features. These features, though helpful, may slow down your PC at a point of time. You can overcome these problems with just a few tweaks. Read on to know how.
- Turn off Search Indexing For quick execution of files, Windows has an index structure known as the Search Index. This index constantly keeps a track of fi les and their whereabouts so that it can be executed quickly when required by the user. This inbuilt tool in Windows is quite handy but may also reduce the performance especially if you have minimum hardware requirements on your PC to run Vista. To turn off Search index, Double-click the “My Computer” icon on the desktop. Right-click an appropriate drive. Select the “Properties” option from the context menu. Under the “General” Tab, clear the “Index this drive for faster searching” checkbox.
- Disable Remote Differential Compression
Remote Differential Compression measures modifi cations of fi les in a network, so that it can be
transferred with minimal bandwidth rather than transferring an entire fi le that has previously been
moved. But due to this constant checking in fi le modifi cations, this feature might hamper your system’s performance. To disable this feature, click on “Start | Control Panel”. Double-click “Programs and Features”. Click the “Turn Windows Features on or off”. Clear the “Remote Differential Compression” checkbox and click “OK”. - Turn off Windows Defender
Windows Defender real-time protection protects your system against the latest malware and other
threats. But at anytime, if you’re not working in a network environment, you can turn off this feature since it might reduce your system’s performance. To do so, click on “Start|Control Panel”. Double-click the “Windows Defender” icon. Click the “Tools and settings” link. Select “Options”. Clear the “Auto Start” checkbox and click “Save”. - Disable Automatic Disk Defragmentation
The defragmentor in Windows Vista scans your system for all scattered fi les on the hard drive and

To disable automatic disk defragmentation, Click “Start | My Computer”. Right-click an appropriate drive and select the “Properties” option. Select the “Tools” tab . Click the “Defragment now” button. Clear the “Run on a schedule” checkbox” and click “OK”. - Windows Ready boost

This can help increase the performance of your system. To do so, open the Control Panel and double-click the “System” icon. Click the “System Protection” link on the left pane. Clear the checkboxes next to the corresponding drives and click “OK”. - Turn off Windows Hibernation
The Hibernation service is extremly useful since it saves a lot of power especially if you are using a laptop but at the same time it also uses a lot of Windows resources. The new Vista feature protects your system from malware by making you manually confi rm a host of useroperations. Every time an application is executed, the UAC pops up asking the user permission to proceed further. This feature doesn’t directly affect your system’s performance but it can be annoying at some point of time. To disable this feature, click “Start| Control Panel”. Double-click the “User Accounts “ icon. Click the “Turn User Account Control on or off” link.
